A Bit About Us

We are a registered charity (no. 264136) dedicated to supporting the patients, visitors and staff of Bristol’s leading cancer specialist centre, the Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre. We are a non-funded organisation and rely entirely upon charitable donations. Our work improves the environment in which the patients are treated and provides comfort and support to them and their families. Below is a bit about what we do and where your money goes…

Advice & Support

As well as providing treatment, there are also many other services and facilities to help friends and relatives during the time spent visiting or staying at the BHOC. From amenities and information to advice and support groups. Find out more.

Equipment & Treatment

Many of our patients require specialist equipment to help diagnose and treat their condition. Much of the money we raise funds medical equipment which the centre could not otherwise afford. We also fund research into new treatments. See some of our recent purchases here.

Research & Staff Training

Our funds support staff in their training and education to help treat the Centre’s patients. We also support research salaries and innovative posts.

Meet the Team

With the exception of a secretary, all those involved with the Friends are volunteers. Some have been patients and others have friends or family who have benefitted from treatment at the Centre. Unlike most charities we are able to ensure that every donation goes directly to our projects. The charity is a company limited by guarantee, and the Trustees are also Directors and members of the company. The liability of members in the event of an insolvency or winding up is restricted to £1. We have a relatively large committee but here are some of the main faces you’ll see around the Centre.

Olivia Grogono

The Main Committee is chaired by Olivia; it meets quarterly to discuss fundraising, and make grants. Olivia retired from a career in financial planning and was encouraged to support the Centre by a past committee member. With family members and close friends having suffered from cancer, she felt drawn to the charity and joined as a Friend in 2003. She took over as Chairman in 2017 and now heads up the committee liaising closely with staff and management.

Liz Pritchard

The administration of the charity is in the capable hands of our secretary Liz, who has an office in the BHOC Reception area and has worked at the Centre since 2004. She helps those wishing to raise funds for the Friends, and will visit organisations to describe the work of the charity. Pop in for a chat with her or call her on 0117 342 3432.
